Last Discovery Activity

Hi,

I really appreciated this educational opportunity - it was fun and allowed a glimpse of Web 2.0. I was worried that I was getting so far behind with technology, etc and now at least I understand that Rollyo is not something to do with cigarettes! I am tempted to check out the 43 things and continue on my learning journey. My husband is a Year 7 teacher and would like to use these activities with his students. Do you have to ask permission from or pay something to the developer?

I'll miss doing these activities - I really liked being able to work away at my own speed. So much of what we do at ACL is group oriented and I really don't learn well that way. Thanks for thinking about those of us who like individualized discovery!

I did "My retirement" as my Rollyo theme and have links to 3 well-known retirement sites from the US (aarp), Canada (CARP) and 50plus as well as the entire web. Try "where to retire" in the search box - most results are about US cities, but not exclusively. The link is the first one to your right.

NetLibrary Discovery Week

Hi,

I'm impressed with the collection of ebooks subscribed to by ACL. I'd like to learn Photoshop so I've put some of the basic Photoshop titles in my list of favourites. I used to be a Technical Writer for an oil company before I went back to get my MLIS. I'd like to do some freelance writing so I've put "Awaken the Writer within" in my list of favourites too. There are also some interesting looking health titles and lots of study guides for students. I still prefer reading a printed book and magazine but I am moving towards using technology to download books. If I complete this and get an MP3 player, I plan to download books using Overdrive - my commute is a long one (1-1 1/2 hours each way!)

Podcast Discovery Week

I've uploaded a YouTube podcast to my blog (see below) and added the RSS feed for Podcast.net to my Bloglines account. I found the podcasts relatively easy to find but then so many of them, either were no longer available or they required some special downloadable software in order to see them. Not a very satisfactory exercise - very frustrating! This applied to all three directories, although Yahoo didn't require as many special downloads.

YouTube Discovery Week

HI,

My husband works with a former librarian and she told me about a new sitcom about librarians, which is/will air in Australia. She told me that the promo was on YouTube so I did a search and here it is. It looks like it might be funny. I love comedy and miss the comedy shows that I used to watch in Canada. My nephew is getting married in London, Canada in December and I'd like to see a video of it. I must ask my sister to take a video and upload it on YouTube so I don't miss anything.

Zohowriter

It worked but Zohowriter kept freezing up - I finally got it to publish on my blog after 7 tries!
I chose Farecast as my Web 2.0 application to discover because my husband and I are hoping to fly to Japan at some point and I want to see how to find the best deals on tickets. This is like other travel sites, you plug in the flight dates, times etc and the software comes up with the cheapest flights. It also shows comparisons for prices against Expedia, CheapAir, CheapTickets, Hotwire, BookingBuddy and others. It had the cheapest fares and it supported searches for flights out of Auckland (which some of the other travel software did not). Highly recommended!

Oops! Forgot to add my comments about Library 2.0. I know it's inevitable but I have a particular interest in older people and I fear that they are going to be left behind unless libraries design facilities and services, which are inclusive. Not everyone knows, likes, wants to use technology.

Discover Wiki Week

Just had a look at the library Wikis you recommended and especially liked the Consumer Info one - I found out about a new magazine title, Where to Retire, which I'm interested in . Will try to see if it is indexed anywhere. Also liked the Nonfiction book reviews in the Book Lovers Wiki, I often make recommendations for purchase based on sites like these. Trouble is I don't have enough time to read the books I know about, without adding more! Loved the best practices wiki too. Although in New Zealand I am working in a public library, I am a Medical Librarian and the practice of medicine has been evidence-based for over a decade now. Glad to see libraries going the same route - will visit this again. Wikis have applicability for libraries of every kind, especially the sub-specialties, like medical, law, corporate librarianship, etc. I have to say that I am still not in the habit of using ACL's reference wiki but it does make sense for questions that are difficult to answer or for questions that come up repeatedly.

I've been away and am trying to get caught up. I've read through and opened a de.licio.us account and tagged one bookmark. I can see that it would have lots of applications - getting all your bookmarks in one place would be great. Had a look at Technorati too - the Learning 2.0 searches in Blog posts and tags but couldn't see how to do the search in the blog directory. Yes the results are different... I had a look at the most popular blogs and really liked the Engadget. Must tell my husband - he'll love it!

Just finished exploring Library Thing. I have travelled a lot and have cookbooks and decorating/design books on many of the countries I've visited. Anyway, I've started entering some of the titles. I displayed using titles and covers. I Have put My Library Thing on my blog.

Had fun with the image generators. Completed reflection one (see right) http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/reflection-generator.html and also the delft china plate but it seemed that you couldn't cut and paste it. I tried text collage which I really liked but I couldn't get it to work. You could see a sample but couldn't play (at least I couldn't figure it out). Also made a magazine cover which was fun using Big Huge Labs.

Television when and how you want it (called My Sky, here) http://www.sky.co.nz/my-sky.aspx. What I'd like but don't know if it exists - a searchable database of television programs, when they are on, what channel, etc instead of having to scroll through an online guide with the remote.

Discovery Week 4 RSS feeds - cont'd

I have plans to do RSS feeds in other non-library related subjects to view from home. I have so little spare time that it is wonderful to be able to go to one place and get caught up in minutes. Presently, I have dozens of emails that I receive at home but often I don't get to them and my husband files them and they are forgotten. Does anyone know if the archive is limited to one month (that's the longest period on the drop down menu)? Do the feeds then just disappear?

Discovery Week 3 con'td

Success! Made a mosaic with the pictures I uploaded to Flickr. Also explored and found another similar program called Patchworkr but there were too many pictures in the queue. I'll go back though - people have done some really beautiful things with it.

Finally made it on to Flickr and uploaded some pictures of displays I've done for the library and viewed them as a slide show. It was fun and I think I'll ask colleagues how to do more, like making a collage or a magazine cover.

Tried to Flickr but can't - screen freezes and I've tried multiple times which leads me to believe that "all that flickrs is not gold". Will try again because from what I've read I'd find it fun!

Week 2 cont'd

Set up a profile on MySpace as part of Web 2.0 activity so I can network . It's good because I've heard a lot about MySpace and other social networking sites but had never ventured there. How is it that all these people have so much time to be on MySpace? Don't they have anything else to do? Amazing....

13/09/07 Created a blog and completed my profile (to the extent that I wanted to)! Clicked on links within the Interests area and was amazed to see how many people are on blogspot.com with similar interests!
